OPHTHALMIC DRUGS - ACTIONS AND PURPOSES OF DIAGNOSTIC MEDICATIONS

PURPOSES AND ACTIONS OF OPHTHALMIC DRUGS            Ophthalmic drugs may be used as a part of tests to diagnose eye disorders, as a principal treatment of eye conditions, or as an adjunct to surgical eye treatment. In addition to their desired action for each use, drugs of all kinds have certain side effects, some of which can be harmful. Because ophthalmic medical assistants often apply topical drugs or assist in ordering or setting up medications for the doctor to administer, they need to be familiar with the most common types of drugs used in ophthalmic practice and their general uses and actions. DIAGNOSTIC MEDICATIONS:             Medications used to diagnose eye conditions include mydriatics, cycloplegics, dyes and anaesthetics. Most of these are available as topical solutions or suspensions, and some are prepared as oinments. Some of these drugs also produce effects that make them additionally useful in treating certain eye disorders. 1. MYDRIATICS:            The act of

OPHTHALMIC AND MEDICAL HISTORY

OPHTHALMIC AND MEDICAL HISTORY       When the physician requests, the ophthalmic assistant begins the comprehensive eye examination by taking a preliminary ophthalmic and medical history of the patient. This information is entered in the patient's record and is generally reviewed by the physician before beginning the examination. The purpose of the history is to determine the specific complaint that brought the patient to the office and to obtain information on any present illness or past ocular history that may help the physician in evaluating and diagnosing the patient's condition. Details on nonocular aspects of the patient's medical history and that of the patient's family may also prove useful.    The ophthalmic assistant obtains the history by asking a specific series of questions and recording the information in the patient's file or chart. The type and amount of information to be gathered by the ophthalmic assistant may vary from one practice to another

MECHANISMS OF DISEASE AND INJURY

MECHANISMS OF DISEASE AND INJURY      The term disease means a specific process in which pathologic (abnormal) changes result in malfunction of a particular part or system of the body. A variety of biologic or other mechanisms can cause disease. However, because none of the body's part or systems exists in isolation, pathologic changes in one part of the body frequently affect the operation of another part. Thus, the process that is the etiology (cause) of one disease may itself be a disease process or the result of another disease. The term injury is often associated with disease because the processes that produce, or are, disease may damage and destroy cells, the microscopic units that compose a tissue, organ or system.       The mechanisms of disease and injury can be divided into 10 general types: 1. Infectious 2. Inflammatory 3. Allergic 4. Ischemic 5. Metabolic 6. Congenital 7. Developmental 8. Degenerative 9. Neoplastic 10. Traumatic 1. Infectious Process

INTERPRETATION OF A PRESCRIPTION

INTERPRETATION OF A PRESCRIPTION              The ophthalmic medical assistant should know how to read the doctor's prescription for medication in order to call it in to the pharmacy when requested and to refer accurately to the medications listed in a patient's medical record. Table represents some of the more common symbols and abbreviations(mostly of Latin words or phrases) used by doctors to write prescriptions. The ophthalmic medical assistant should become familiar with them. Sample prescription will have a pad printed with the doctor's name, the doctor may include the following information on the medical prescription:    1. The patient's name and address, and the date of the prescription.    2. The name of the drug and its concentration or dose.   3. The amount of the drug to be given to the patient(the subscription), usually written beside the symbol "M" or "Mit" (for mitte, meaning send) or "dispi" (for dispense), which a
